Jerry Pearlman MBE (1933-2018) was a former national Vice President of the Ramblers Association, President of the West Riding Ramblers, the Leeds Law Society, a founder-Trustee of the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust and for 18 years a leading Member of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.
He gave much of his 60 year career as a solicitor in Leeds to protecting public rights of way and access to the countryside. Among his many achievements was crucial work on the drafting of the 2000 Countryside and Rights of Way Act which secured public rights of access to open countryside throughout England and Wales, including the magnificent open fells and moors of West Yorkshire and the Yorkshire Dales.
Jerry lived for many years in Alwoodley, very close to the start of this easy, five mile walk dedicated to his memory, which goes through some exceptionally beautiful countryside within the Leeds City boundary, yet on the edge of his beloved Yorkshire Dales between Alwoodley and Harewood village, therefore linking two aspects of Jerry’s life.

Distance: 5 miles (8 km) Allow 2 - 2½ hours Terrain: Field paths, tracks and traffic free estate roads. Short sections can be muddy after wet weather. Boots or heavy duty trainers recommended. Dogs should be kept on leads especially through the Harewood Estate with livestock. Grade: Easy – moderate. Mostly level but two moderate ascents. Five stiles. |
